The Johana Hikiyama Festival has a proud 300 years of history. In December 2016 the festival became a Unesco Intangible Cultural Heritage. It is held every year on May 4th and 5th, and there is a parade that starts with a shishimai (lion-dog slaying dance) and is proceeded by kenhoko (a giant spear decoration on a float), kasahoko (a big umbrella decoration on a float), mikoshi (a float shrine that houses a deity), and ioriyatai (a portable little room that people make music inside of as it moves) in that order. Hikiyama is a refined and elegant festival that moves all around central Johana.
